The Five Types of Hoses Used by Wineries

Sanitary Hose in Winery

Wineries typically use a variety of hoses to facilitate different processes within the winemaking industry. Here are some commonly used hoses in wineries:

  1. Food-Grade PVC Hoses: These hoses are commonly used for transferring liquids such as wine, juice, or water. They are lightweight, flexible, and resistant to chemicals, making them suitable for various applications in wineries.
    • Temp. Range: -40°F to 225°F. (CIP to 248°F. Not for continuous steam service)
    • Working Pressure: 200PSI
    • Ultra smooth inner bore
    • Will not impart taste or odor
    • Novaflex FDA Food Transfer Hose Assembly
  2. Silicone Hoses: Silicone hoses are highly preferred in wineries due to their excellent heat resistance and inert properties. They are often used for transferring hot liquids, such as during the sterilization process or when moving wine between tanks.
    • Temp. Range: -100°F to 350°F
    • Ultra flexible
    • For use with autoclave and CIP processes
    • Will not impart taste or odor
    • Non-toxic, Non-pyrogenic
    • TSP CO-X PTFE Hose
  3. Reinforced Rubber Hoses: Reinforced rubber hoses are known for their durability and strength. They are commonly used for heavy-duty applications, such as transferring wine from the press to fermentation vessels or pumping wine during racking or bottling.
  4. Stainless Steel Hoses: Stainless steel hoses are used in wineries for high-pressure applications or when a high level of hygiene is required. They are particularly useful for transferring wine between tanks or barrels, as they can withstand pressure and maintain cleanliness.
    • Tube: PTFE unpigmented, USP Class VI & FDA Criteria
    • Reinforcement: Stainless Braided, 1″ & 3/4″ are double braided
    • Recommended Cleaning: CIP, SIP, Autoclave
    • Temperature Range: -100 to 450° F
    • Alternative Connection Styles Available
    • TCB Steel Braided Convoluted Hose
  5. Crush-Resistant Hoses: During harvest, wineries often need hoses that can withstand the weight of grapes or must without collapsing. Crush-resistant hoses are designed to maintain their shape even under pressure, making them ideal for transferring grape must or juice during processing.
    • Tube: White FDA, 3-A, EPDM Liner
    • Reinforcement: Spiral-plied synthetic fabric 4 plies 1-1.5″ – 6 plies 2″ & over
    • Recommended Cleaning: CIP, COP
    • Cover: Purple EPDM w/white stripe
    • Temperature Range:-40° to 225° F
    • Compliance: USDA Class III requirements, FDA CFR Title 21 177.2600, 3-A 18-03
    • RCR Crush Resistant Hose

It’s important to note that wineries must ensure that the hoses they use are specifically designed for food-grade applications and comply with industry standards and regulations. Regular inspection and maintenance of hoses are necessary to ensure their integrity and prevent any contamination risks.
